Region 5 Youth win the 2021 AHA Youth of the Year and First Runner Up!
Arabian Horse Association (AHA) youth members are exceptional! The Youth of the Year Award honors one outstanding youth member who exemplifies character and dedication to excellence in this or her academic and community achievements, as well as contributions to the Arabian horse industry and AHA.In 2021, one candidate distinguished herself with a passion for the Arabian horse breed in bringing industry individuals together to help others.
AHA is proud to announce Miss Sophia Huffman, from Lewiston, Idaho, as the honored winner of the 2021 Youth of the Year Award. Sophia receives the Youth of the Year perpetual trophy as well as a $5,000 scholarship from the Arabian Horse Foundation. Sophia is a member of the Emerald Empire Arabian Horse club and Region 5.
Compassion, humility, and motivation are the foundation of this young woman’s approach to life. She is currently enrolled in a Dual Credit program at Lewis-Clark State College, allowing her to gain college and high school credits at the same time. She is a Certified Nursing Assistant and works in a local nursing home. Though this position has been one of the most challenging for Sophia, she says that serving her community in this way has taught her to be patient, thorough, and compassionate in everything she does.
Moreover, our Youth of the Year has and is an important part of the Arabian Horse Youth Association. She competed in the Youth Judging Contest earning her first National
Title as the High Individual Overall. She believes that involvement at any level is important as it improves not only our own lives, but the lives or others through the work that we do when we are involved in something worthwhile.

From the desk of Carrie Olson - Region 5 Director
August 9, 2021
Dear Region 5 Arabian horse enthusiasts,
As most of you are aware, the AHA BOD passed some new qualifications which go into effect in the 2022 competition year. Since there is some discontent and angst over this action, I would like to make a few points of order:
1) The motion to put new qualifications into play was actually passed at the November 2020 board meeting (see Motion#27-11/1/20-BOD), with the fact that the qualification chart, however amended, would be voted on by the BOD at the August 6, 2021 meeting.
2) The AHA survey that was sent out on August 2, 2021, immediately after the Town Hall meeting, was responded to by 928 members, or only 8% of the current AHA membership. The question that asked - Do you support eliminating all qualification requirements?, was virtually a 50/50 split. Unfortunately, the survey was a given too short a time period.
3) Also keep in mind that any shows that you went to this year, still do count for qualifications going forward. And they still allow the open show qualifications for dressage classes.
Once the CAC (Competition Advisory Committee) began working on revising the qualification chart in March, they did bounce it to the BOD a few times, we gave input and they revised again. Then once it got out “onto the street” and shared - they did take many things into consideration, such as: the welfare of the horse, the amount of time/money people can spend to get qualified and the fact that we are coming out of a pandemic.
Is it all perfect? No. Does it still need some re-working? Yes. That’s where I ask for your input. Let’s go forward and make some positive suggestions and/or comments about what you want to see changed or offer up a solution.
Please send me an email or give me a call. I would be happy to listen and chat.
Lastly, I also want to encourage all of you to opt-in to AHA emails, to ensure that you are included in future important emails and surveys.
The link to do that is here: https://www.arabianhorses.org/additional/news/
Thank you for your time and being a lover of the Arabian breed!
Sincerely,
Carrie
